This summer, Juhu Ecological Park invited a pangolin expert and wildlife lover to take a group of people for a walk to search for nocturnal fauna. She first gave a short talk about how to identify frogs and snakes with a flowchart. She even prepared jars and jars of snake specimen and different animal faeces for us to guess.

In two hours, we could hear and see 6 different frog species- La Touche’s frog, Ornate chorus frog, Olive frog, Rice field frog, White-lipped tree frog, and Buergeria otai, an endemic frog in Taiwan. We also spotted a bat, some ants, beetles, bush crickets, two flying squirrels, a green pit viper, a muntjac, crabs, and spiders. We walked for 30 minutes to a tiny waterfall and stream to look for animals. By the waterfall, we saw dozens and dozens of frogs on rocks with a snake lurching above not too far. We even spent a good 10 minutes observing a spider prey on an insect. At the end of the walk, we were tired, but we enjoyed walking in the dark.
